In               many               tattoo               parlors,               they               will               pierce               someone               however               depending               on               the               age               of               the               person,               they               may               or               may               not               require               an               adult               present.

They               are               beautiful               when               done               correctly,               however               can               add               severe               health               risk               if               not               and               possibly               do               damage               to               your               body.

The               healing               time               also               varies               depending               on               your               health               and               whether               or               not               you               have               diabetes,               or               another               disorder               that               entails               you               take               longer               to               heal.

It's               also               important               that               you               watch               the               artist               while               he               gets               his               supplies               in               order,               because               they               should               always               have               clean               utensils.
               Health               concerns               should               always               come               first               when               thinking               about               a               body               piercing               or               even               something               as               simple               as               getting               your               ears               pierced.

Infections               can               spread               rapidly               without               any               warnings.

If               you               have               a               warm               sensation               or               pain,               call               your               doctor               or               go               back               to               the               person               who               did               your               piercing,               it               may               be               infected.

Body               Piercing               is               a               fun,               beautiful               source               to               make               a               statement,               however               keep               in               mind               that               just               because               all               your               friends               have               them               is               not               a               good               enough               reason               to               feel               that               you               need               to               do               it               also.

Sometimes               being               different               is               a               statement               all               in               its               own               and               can               speak               louder               to               other               people.

    Your               teenager               will               not               stop               bothering               you               on               one               subject:               they               want               a               piercing.

    More               importantly,               you               will               not               let               them               have               it.

    A               piercing               can               cause               scars,               can               get               caught,               and               can               make               for               a               bad               first               impression               depending               on               where               it               is.

    Most               parents               side               with               you:               piercings               are               "don't".

    Sometimes               though,               it               may               be               better               to               just               allow               your               teenager               to               get               a               piercing.

    Will               my               teenager               get               a               piercing               anyways?
                   This               is               the               first               question               any               parent               should               ask.

    When               I               first               started               college,               I               ran               into               a               young               twelve-year               old               girl               at               a               body               piercing               shop.

    She               had               been               told               no               by               her               mother               and               had               proceeded               to               pierce               her               lip               anyway.

    Although               she               was               lucky,               doing               this               could               have               caused               nerve               damage.

    Although               I               would               never               advocate               giving               12               year               olds               a               lip               piercing,               it               might               be               a               wise               decision               to               at               least               tell               them               a               date               in               the               future               when               they               could.

    If               you               have               an               overly               rebellious               or               brave               teenager,               they               may               just               do               it               anyways.
                   Are               they               having               problems               in               school?
                   To               be               frank,               most               teenagers               get               a               piercing               with               or               without               parents               approval.

    Some               may               just               have               to               wait               until               they               are               of               legal               age.

    Should               you               go               ahead               and               let               your               teenager               get               a               piercing?

    Possibly.

    If               they               are               having               problems               in               school               or               behavior               issues,               a               piercing               can               work               as               a               goal               to               work               towards.

    If               they               improve               their               grades,               then               let               the               teenager               get               a               piercing               as               a               reward.

    By               the               time               they               reach               the               teenage               years,               most               kids               figure               out               that               there               is               little               that               mom               or               dad               can               do               for               punishment.

    Instead,               create               a               reward               that               they               want               and               will               work               towards.
                   What               if               I               let               my               teenager               get               a               piercing               and               they               ask               for               another?
                   This               is               a               valid               question.

    Piercings               are               like               potato               chips.

    One               just               is               not               enough.

    The               beauty               about               you               taking               control               of               when               your               teenager               can               get               a               piercing               is               that               it               will               be               your               decision               to               make.

    If               you               set               limits               and               goals-but               allow               minimal               piercing               from               the               outset-               you               can               still               limit               it               later               on.

    You               can               set               a               set               number               limit               or               location               limit,               both               are               fair.

    A               number               limit               also               has               the               added               benefit               of               keeping               your               teenager               from               setting               off               metal               detectors               while               also               allowing               them               to               switch               around               which               piercing               they               want.

    Are               lip               piercings               out               of               style?

    They               can               switch               it               to               a               nose               piercing               without               breaking               your               set               rules               and               you               can               still               have               the               satisfaction               of               seeing               only               one               piercing               on               their               face.
                   The               ultimate               answer               as               to               whether               to               let               your               teenager               get               a               piercing               or               not               is               up               to               you.

    Just               as               with               tattooing,               other               forms               of               body               modification               have               existed               for               many               centuries.

    If               the               ears               were               pierced               the               spirits               couldn't               enter               the               body               through               the               ear               canal.
                   Nose               piercing               can               be               dated               back               to               biblical               times               as               read               in               the               book               of               Genesis.
                   Tongue               piercing               was               practiced               by               the               Aztecs.

    It               was               done               to               draw               blood               and               induce               an               altered               state               of               conciousness.
                   Lip               piercing               originated               from               African               tribal               cultures.

    It               was               used               as               a               status               symbol               and               only               the               highest               ranking               male               members               of               society               were               allowed               to               wear               them.
                   Some               people               choose               to               go               even               further               and               have               their               genitals               pierced.

    Genital               piercing               is               practiced               in               many               parts               of               the               world               for               various               reasons,               mostly               sexual.
                   Eyeball               tattooing               is               an               up               and               coming               practice.

    It               can               be               very               dangerous               and               should               only               be               done               by               an               experienced,               licensed               individual.

    It               is               done               to               young               girls               reaching               the               age               of               puberty               to               ensure               they               will               not               enjoy               sex               and               therefore               will               not               stray               from               their               partners.
                   Genital               bisection               is               a               male               form               of               mutilation.

                   Tooth               filing               is               practiced               in               Africa,               Indonesia               and               the               Phillipines               as               well               as               in               the               United               States.

    Most               often               teeth               are               filed               into               points               to               give               the               appearance               of               fangs.
                   Scarification               involves               cutting               the               skin               with               any               type               of               sharp               object               to               cause               scars               or               keloids               to               form.

    This               is               done               in               many               tribes               to               welcome               youngsters               into               adulthood               or               to               show               which               tribe               they               belong               to.

    Branding               is               another               form               of               scarification               and               is               done               in               much               the               same               manner               as               branding               livestock.

    Any               type               of               scarification               puts               a               person               at               risk               for               infection               and               should               only               be               done               by               a               professional.
                   These               are               just               a               few               forms               of               body               modification               being               practiced               around               the               world.

    There               are               way               too               many               to               try               to               mention               all               of               them.

    With               so               many               people               doing               such               horrific               things               to               their               bodies               we               may               start               to               wonder               why.

    Is               it               because               they               want               attention?

    Or               is               it               because               they               want               to               feel               beautiful?

    Or               could               it               possibly               be               that               they               just               can't               seem               to               get               comfortable               in               their               own               skin               so               they               continue               to               modify               it               hoping               that               one               day               they               will               be               at               peace               with               their               body?
