About 'nose rings hoops'|Nose-ring, Shorty and the Vampire
Jewelry making is a fun hobby. There are so many different types of jewelry you can make, from necklaces, earrings, bracelets, even rings. What can really make your jewelry unique is by incorporating vintage rhinestones, glass beads and other materials. The golden era of vintage costume jewelry was from the 1920's to 70's, the earlier pieces being more collectible and valuable. Back then, the jewelry makers were artisans, and took great care to put out a quality jewelry product. Ever wonder why some pieces were heavier than others? Because they used real metal, copper, even silver and gold when making affordable pieces. Since there was competition among the various companies, they tried to make their line of costume jewelry stand out, with some companies incorporating more elaborate and finely detailed beads and fixtures than others. Its great to find these old pieces, but you can also find "as is" pieces for a fraction of the cost to make your own unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry! The best places to find vintage jewelry and "as is" pieces to make jewelry are at garage sales and thrift stores. Garage sales can yield some good finds, but the thrift stores get donations on a steady basis, and one can get super cheap quality rhinestones if they are on broken or incomplete pieces. Try to collect the best rhinestones you can find, preferably from old earrings, already with holes through the center. These are absolutely perfect for making your own dangle earrings! They should not be cloudy, but have a colorful sparkly look, like Austrian crystals. Finding the quality faux jewels is easy. All you really need is some inexpensive materials from your local craft store, such as Michael's, or Wal-Mart, and you will be all set. Dangle earrings are the easiest pieces to make. You can even mix vintage and new beads for a unique look. Newer beads are easier to find as well at the craft shops, just look for ones that have detail, and don't look as if they are brand new, like in manufactured. The whole idea is to make your pieces part vintage and beautiful. While at the store, stock up on some supplies, like a good pair of cutting scissors that cut wire, small needle nose pliers, clasps for necklaces, wire for necklaces and the dangle earring materials. Necklaces and earrings are the easiest to make. As you become more experienced, you can venture onto bracelets and rings. Buying a how to guide at the craft store can teach you how to correctly assemble each piece, especially if you want to make multi-layer detailed bead bracelets. Vintage small seed beads are plentiful, especially on old broken necklaces, which can sell for a dollar and under at thrift stores and garage sales! To make your own earrings, simply follow the directions on the back of the package, or pick up an inexpensive how to guide as well. These are usually found right next to the supplies. Remember, the more you make, the better a jewelry artisan you will become, for practice makes perfect. Give some pieces to your friends and family. Proudly wear your own stuff too. If you get compliments, and people want to know where they could buy what you are wearing, who knows? Maybe you can even start your own little business! |
